K-Thengono Design Studio's Split Mass

K-Thengono Design Studio has designed Split Mass Residence, a family home in Tangerang, Indonesia. The project features sloping green roofs and facades made from woven PE rattan.

According to studio founder Kelvin Thengono, the primary goal was to create a seamless flow of spaces. "The main design goal was to allow a seamless sequence of spaces that keeps the family connected to one another, while also staying closely aligned with the surrounding landscape," he told Dezeen. Split volumes provide different pathways between indoors and outdoors, naturally guiding occupants through shared areas to an open rooftop garden.

Design and Layout

The ground floor utilizes an L-shaped plan wrapped in bamboo-textured concrete. Rooms are arranged around a central garden patio. A protruding entrance foyer and staircase are clad in woven panels made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These panels allow light and air to reach the overhanging upper levels.

Thengono explained the material choice. "We liked the contrast between the two materials: the concrete gives the house a robust presence, while the woven rattan softens it," he said. The rattan also filters light and enhances privacy. The pattern in the handmade panels celebrates Indonesian vernacular design.

Social and Recreational Spaces

The first floor contains private bedrooms and bathrooms alongside an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. This communal space opens directly to the outdoors on two sides.

On one side, a glass door leads to a sloping grassy roof. An outdoor staircase from there ascends to a swimming pool and barbeque area on a higher level. On the opposite side of the living area, a wide indoor staircase doubles as seating for television viewing and socializing. This staircase leads up to a home gym.

An additional outdoor green-roofed staircase rises past the gym, culminating in a dedicated rooftop yoga space. This tiered arrangement of recreational areas encourages movement and gathering across multiple levels.
