Curry Barker Launches Mama Bear Horror Short on YouTube
Curry Barker premieres the five-minute horror short 'Mama Bear' on YouTube via a Microsoft Windows partnership, following his breakout feature 'Obsession' which grossed over $500 million worldwide.

A new five-minute horror short from director Curry Barker, titled 'Mama Bear', premiered exclusively on YouTube on Thursday morning. The release, sponsored by Microsoft Windows, follows the staggering $519 million worldwide box office success of Barker's previous film, 'Obsession', which was made on a production budget under $1 million.
The short film 'Mama Bear' is available to stream for free on Barker's That's a Bad Idea YouTube channel. The premise and runtime details are currently under wraps. Its release aligns with the Halloween season, having premiered on October 29.
Cast and creative team
'Mama Bear' stars Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, with Katie Sarife as Lacey, Ericka Kreuz as Ms. Wilson, and Joshua Snyder as Floyd's doppelgänger. The project reunites Barker with 'Obsession' production designer Vivian Gray. While the title has sparked speculation of a link to the character Baron 'Bear' Bailey from 'Obsession', the short is currently considered a standalone project, not a confirmed sequel.
Barker's upcoming feature film, 'Anything But Ghosts', continues his collaboration with key partners. The supernatural comedy, scheduled for theatrical release on May 7, 2027, is co-written with and stars longtime collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. The ensemble also includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, Violet McGraw, and Chris Reinacher.
Reaction and industry context
The short film arrives as Barker enjoys one of the biggest breakout years for a filmmaker in recent memory. He recently received IndieWire's inaugural Future of Filmmaking Award at a Los Angeles summit. Reflecting on his roots in independent short films, Barker highlighted the formative role of direct audience feedback. Curry Barker said: "I definitely learned from the comment section quite a bit. I think the main thing I would take away is how smart the audience is."
He suggested that without that early lesson, he might write more exposition and feel less confident in audience comprehension. 'Obsession', acquired by Focus Features at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival after a Netflix streaming offer, has already won a host of awards and scored highly with critics and the public. Its lead character, Nikki, ranked as a top Halloween costume in Google's 2026 search data.
What comes next
Barker is capitalizing on his momentum with a packed slate of future projects. Following the success of 'Obsession', he secured an eight-figure deal with Universal and Blumhouse for a mysterious original horror movie. He is also lining up a reboot of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' for A24.
Barker had completed 'Anything But Ghosts' before 'Obsession' even opened in theaters. The film follows a group of amateur paranormal investigators. The director has also mentioned potential for a follow-up to 'Obsession', including 'Obsession 2' or an anthology series exploring different wishes going awry. His upcoming 2027 feature 'Anything But Ghosts' is scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
