SBIFF 2027 Names Virtuoso Award and Outstanding Performer Honorees

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival named the recipients of its 2027 Virtuoso Awards on Friday. The festival revealed eight honorees for their standout film performances ahead of its 42nd edition, which runs from February 3 to 13, 2027.

The Virtuoso Award recognizes a select group of talent whose exceptional work in films has placed them at the center of the conversation around the year’s most noteworthy cinematic performances. The group will attend the festival in the coastal California city to receive the award and discuss their work on February 7.

Carrie Coon received the Virtuoso Award for her role in The Liberation. Jaafar Jackson was honored for his performance in Michael. Inde Navarrette earned the award for her work in Obsession.

Outstanding Performer of the Year Award

John Malkovich was selected to receive the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award. The award will be bestowed during the 42nd annual SBIFF.

In a release announcing the award, SBIFF executive director Roger Durling called Malkovich a legendary actor. Durling stated that Malkovich gives his best performance to date in Wild Horse Nine, combining pathos, volatility, vulnerability, and tenderness.

The festival's history of Outstanding Performer of the Year honorees includes a long list of major stars. Past recipients include Ralph Fiennes, Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Sacha Baron Cohen, Adam Driver, Rami Malek, Margot Robbie, Allison Janney, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan, Steve Carell, Jennifer Lawrence, Viola Davis, James Franco, Colin Firth, Penélope Cruz, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Heath Ledger, Kate Winslet, and Charlize Theron.
