Foster + Partners Industrial Design has developed a new retail concept for British motorcycle brand Norton Motorcycles. The design features sleek metal display stands that present the vehicles like sculptures on individual plinths.

According to a report on Dezeen, the brand approached the design arm of the architecture firm founded by Norman Foster to help redefine how its motorcycles are presented. This initiative is part of Norton Motorcycles' ongoing rebranding project, which seeks to emphasise the company's engineering heritage while promoting a modern, global outlook.

Design Philosophy

"Motorcycles at their best are emotional, sculptural objects of desire," said the company's chief creative advisor, Gerry McGovern. He steered the project in collaboration with Foster + Partners. McGovern stated that in the new experiential stores, the bikes "will be presented in environments that reflect their precision and modernity."

The futuristic podiums are designed to highlight the craftsmanship, engineering, and sculptural qualities of the motorcycles. Each unit integrates practical features like overhead lighting to illuminate aerodynamic forms. They also include storage drawers and an open cabinet for displaying accessories.

"Norton's history is rooted in design, engineering and craftsmanship," said Norman Foster. "Our design concept seeks to be a contemporary expression of the company's heritage and the timeless character of its motorcycles."

Modular Global Rollout

The retail concept is modular and designed to work across various formats and scales, from compact showrooms to flagship destinations. The system can adapt by incorporating supporting features such as digital and interactive displays. It also includes areas for configuring bespoke machines.

Norton Motorcycles plans to eventually roll out the concept to over 200 stores globally. This will start with flagship locations across key global markets.

"Working in collaboration with Foster + Partners, we are placing in-store design and architecture at the heart of our resurgence," McGovern added. He described the goal as elevating the retail experience to something "clean, modern and compellingly desirable." The ambition, he noted, is not merely to sell motorcycles but to stage them, transforming a purchase from a transaction into an experience.

Brand Context

Norton Motorcycles was founded in 1898. The brand is known for its participation in events like the Isle of Man TT race and for historical models including the Manx, Atlas and Navigator. India's TVS Motor Company acquired the brand in 2020.

The new owner has invested in a new manufacturing facility in England, a visual identity, and this retail strategy. The aim is to reestablish Norton Motorcycles as a producer of some of the world's most desirable motorcycles. The photography for the project was courtesy of Norton.
