2026 Emmy Awards See No Actors of Color Win Major Acting
At the 78th Emmy Awards, all 10 major acting winners in drama, comedy, and limited series categories were white.
The 78th Emmy Awards, held on Monday, saw no actors of color win in any of the major televised acting categories. All 10 winners in the lead and supporting races for drama and comedy, plus the lead actor and actress in a limited series, were white.
The only performers of color to win Emmys this cycle did so at the earlier Creative Arts ceremonies. Ernest Harden Jr. Won for guest actor in a drama for HBO Max's "The Pitt," and Octavia Spencer won for narrating "Lost Women of Alaska." Behind the camera, Hiro Murai won the comedy directing prize for Apple TV's "Widow's Bay," becoming the first Asian director to win that category.
Nominations Decline
Variety's count shows a significant drop in nominations for performers of color this year. Only 17 were nominated in the lead and supporting acting races, down from 28 in 2025. This marks a 39% decline. The peak was 49 nominations in 2021, the last time the ceremony sparked the #EmmysSoWhite hashtag.
The Emmy Awards are organized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).
The Voting Machinery
The outcome is shaped by the Television Academy's voting structure. Its more than 20,000 members are divided into roughly 30 peer groups, such as performers, cinematographers, and sound designers. This system determines who nominates within each discipline and how the full membership selects the winners.
This year's ballot was drawn from a slightly smaller pool of submissions. The nominees came from 555 program entries across 14 categories, down about 7.5% from 600 the previous year. The number of eligible series also shifted.

Historic Wins Amidst Homogeneity
The night still featured historic achievements for individual performers. Matthew Rhys won two lead acting Emmys in one night, for the limited series "The Beast in Me" and the comedy "Widow's Bay." This made him the first performer ever to win two lead trophies in a single ceremony. His victory in the limited series category, however, edged out Oscar Isaac for "Beef." Isaac, had he won, would have been only the third Latino actor to win that prize.
