DOC NYC has announced its influential 15-film Short List for the 2026 awards season, featuring titles with strong Oscar potential.

DOC NYC has announced its influential 15-film Short List for 2026, featuring titles with strong awards potential. The festival revealed its annual list this week as the documentary Oscar race begins to take shape.
Festival details and access
The festival runs in person from November 11-19 at IFC Center, SVA Theatre, and Village East by Angelika in New York City. It will continue online through November 29, with films available to viewers across the U.S. All films will have theatrical screenings at the festival.
Highlighted films and their accolades
Notable titles on the short list include films that have already claimed major international prizes. 'Rehearsals for a Revolution,' which will have its New York City premiere in the festival's Winner’s Circle section, won the L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at Cannes. It was also selected as the UK submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
Another highlighted film is 'To Hold a Mountain.' It won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and was chosen to represent Montenegro in the same Oscar category.
Past success as an Oscar predictor
DOC NYC’s Short List has a formidable track record as an Oscar bellwether. For 14 of the last 15 years, the festival screened the documentary that went on to win the Academy Award. It has screened 64 of the last 75 Oscar-nominated documentary features.
Historically, most DOC NYC shortlist titles overlap with the Academy’s official 15-film Oscar shortlist. Last year, four of the five Documentary Feature Oscar nominees came from the list, with 11 of the shortlisted titles appearing. The year before that, DOC NYC predicted 14 out of 15 Oscar nominees.

Movies that appear on both the DOC NYC Short List and the ten Critics Choice Association Feature Documentary nominees are considered particularly strong future awards contenders. The Short List selection process is overseen by Artistic Director Jaie Laplante, Director of Special Projects Thom Powers, and consultant Samah Ali.
Jaie Laplante on the list’s significance
Artistic Director Jaie Laplante emphasized the list’s role in shaping the documentary race. He stated the festival is aware its list is one of the first to define the competition each year. The power of the list, he noted, is that it suggests the 15 films the documentary branch absolutely needs to watch before voting.
Laplante acknowledged the festival's near-perfect record remains just out of reach. "We haven’t hit 15 out of 15 yet," Laplante said. "But we got really close. This is the ring that we’re chasing every year." Directors often appear in person at the festival's screenings, which this year will include the NYC premiere of 'Rehearsals for a Revolution' and other award-winning films in the Winner’s Circle section.
