La Bola Negra will receive the Gotham Vanguard Tribute at the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards on November 30, 2026. The ceremony will be held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Tribute significance

The Gotham Vanguard Tribute honors pioneering films that push the boundaries of cinema through fearless artistic choices. Jeffrey Sharp, the executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, praised the film's ambitiously daring approach. He said it aligns with the tribute's ethos.

Sharp also noted the film's deeper resonance. "Inspiring and imaginative, ‘La Bola Negra’ reminds us why Federico García Lorca remains one of the twentieth century’s essential voices," he said. The tribute last year honored Guillermo del Toro, Oscar Isaac, and Jacob Elordi for their work on a reimagining of 'Frankenstein'.

Film background

Directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known collectively as Los Javis, the film is inspired by an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca. It draws extensively on his writings and legacy. The narrative weaves together three interconnected stories set in key years of Spanish history.

The film's three generational segments are:

YearCharacterActorCentral Conflict
1932CarlosMilo QuifesGrapples with yearning to belong in a fractured society
1937SebastiánGuitarricadelafuenteSeeks connection amid conflict
2017AlbertoCarlos GonzálezUncovers a buried family secret that unveils truths suppressed by time

Guitarricadelafuente makes his acting debut in the film. The cast also includes Miguel Bernardeau as Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, Julio Torres as Juan Pablo, Penélope Cruz as Nené Romero, and Glenn Close as Isabelle. The film's development was informed by Alberto Conejero’s play La piedra oscura.

Recent accolades

La Bola Negra arrives at the Gothams with major festival wins. Calvo and Ambrossi won the Best Director Prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film also secured the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

That TIFF victory was historic. It marked the first Netflix title to win the festival's top prize in 15 years. It was also the first international film to do so in that same period.

Awards trajectory

The film is now positioned as a major contender in the current awards season. It is Spain’s official submission for the Academy Award for International Feature Film. Its theatrical rollout is designed to build momentum.

La Bola Negra opens in New York City and Los Angeles on October 16. It will then expand to additional theaters across the United States and Canada. Select theaters in the US and Canada will show the film in a special 35mm format. The film will debut on Netflix in the United States and Canada on December 2.
