Lauri Design Studio renovates Michigan lake
Lauri Design Studio has renovated a 2005 lakefront house on Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay, creating a 'calm, connected' home with a new family loft space
California-based Lauri Design Studio has completed a renovation of the Willow Point lakefront house overlooking Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. The project, led by studio founder Jenni Lauri, reimagined the 2005-built contemporary home to add warmth and improve its connection to the landscape.
According to the studio, every decision was guided by how the home would be lived in. "For this project, every decision - from reworking the architecture to layering natural materials - was guided by how the home would be lived in, creating spaces that feel calm, connected, and meant for gathering," said Lauri.
Architectural Reconfiguration
The floor plan was completely reworked to strengthen the relationship between the interior and the outdoors. Staircases were relocated and sight lines were cleared to improve spatial flow and frame views. The glass-wrapped lower floor now features interconnected kitchen, dining, living, and family rooms designed as one large gathering space.
A new picture window was cut through a concrete wall to give the kitchen a forest view. Textured Ceppo stone was selected for countertops because it resembles Lake Michigan's sandy shores. In the living area, a beaded sculpture by Kelly Farley hangs from the ceiling near a redesigned fireplace.
Material and Spatial Details
The original central steel staircase connecting all three floors was refinished with metallic plaster. The main entry staircase was rebuilt using solid travertine, ash treads, and a curved plaster handrail.
Upstairs, a key addition is a new loft space described by the studio as a family 'mosh pit'. This cushioned area provides a spot for relaxation with lake views. "Inspired by the nostalgia of a sunken living room, it has become the family's favorite gathering place," the studio said. It hosts card games, movie nights, and naps.
The primary suite was designed like a private apartment. It includes a lounge, a kitchenette, and a bathroom vanity made from Travertino Rizzi stone that overlooks the bay.
Design Philosophy and Context
Lauri Design Studio stated the home was designed around the family's traditions. "More than any individual room, the home was designed around the family's evolving traditions, creating spaces where multiple generations can gather, reconnect, and build memories for years to come," the studio said.
Michigan's extensive Great Lakes shorelines host many waterfront homes.
