Goop Kitchen opens San Diego restaurant

Gwyneth Paltrow's wellness company Goop has opened its first sit-down restaurant. It's called Goop Kitchen Del Mar. The 92-seat flagship opened on 31 August. It is located at the One Paseo shopping complex in San Diego.

The brand says the location offers a new way to experience Goop. This marks a broader expansion. The Goop Kitchen subsidiary launched in 2021. It started primarily as a takeout and delivery service. It was an upscale fast-casual concept.

Design and Collaboration

Paltrow worked with the Texas-based Michael Hsu Office of Architecture. They handled the interior design. The team stated that Paltrow worked closely with them. She personally curated every detail. The goal was to make the space feel raise yet welcoming.

Studio founder Michael Hsu said her involvement was deep. "Gwyneth has a real design vocabulary," Hsu said. "We could go deeper with her than we usually can. Down to the nuance of how a piece of stone meets a piece of wood." He credited her attention to detail. It made the spaces sharper and more considered.

Coastal Interior Details

The design is coastal. It aligns with San Diego's beach culture. A black-and-white colour palette runs throughout.

Visitors see a dramatically veined marble feature wall. An ordering system rests on a large wooden desk there. The space mixes walnut millwork and banquets with striped upholstery. There are various textured surfaces, including a tiled floor. Brushed-metal pendant lights hang above. Two thin rows of black-and-white checked tiles add detail.

Banquet seating lines large steel-framed windows. It also spreads into the room's centre. The team described the interior as anchored by the marble wall. It is layered with warm, natural details.

Patio and Planned Expansion

The outside patio continues the theme. It has mint green metal chairs and marble table-tops. The same striped upholstery found inside is used outside. Scalloped pagoda umbrellas fill the space. They are lined with a black edge.

The team said the space works for many occasions. From a weekday lunch to a sunset dinner. It is designed to capture San Diego's sun-soaked essence.

Goop Kitchen plans to open more locations. Sites in La Jolla, downtown San Diego, and Manhattan are next.

The menu currently features salads and bowls. The team stated that Goop Kitchen will explore expanding the menu. This takes advantage of having its first sit-down restaurant.

The Michael Hsu Office of Architecture has worked on several restaurants before. Their portfolio includes a Houston seafood restaurant. It also includes an Austin eatery in a building from the 1890s. The studio has worked with larger chains too. They designed the Shake Shack headquarters in New York.
