Ferrari’s inaugural electric vehicle, the Luce, achieved a historic sale price of $40 million at a RM Sotheby’s charity auction held during Monterey Car Week in California. The all-white, special-edition model, designed by former Apple designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson, was originally expected to bring in just over $1 million, making the final figure more than sixty times the pre-auction estimate.

## Auction Outcome and Record

The auction result establishes a new benchmark for a brand-new car sold at auction. Sotheby’s confirmed that every dollar raised will be directed to educational initiatives administered by the Ferrari Foundation.

## Design Controversy and Market Reaction

When the Luce was unveiled in May, its unconventional silhouette-featuring four doors and five seats-sparked debate among enthusiasts and industry observers. Critics argued that the design strayed too far from traditional Ferrari styling cues. Former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo, who led the company for 23 years, voiced strong disapproval, stating in an Italian media interview, "We’re risking the destruction of a legend, and I’m truly sorry about that. I hope they at least remove the prancing horse."

The backlash had an immediate impact on the company’s stock, with Ferrari shares slipping eight per cent shortly after the launch. Despite the criticism, the Luce proved commercially viable; the Financial Times reported that the entire 2026 production target sold out within two months of the model’s debut, and the first deliveries are slated for October.

## Designers’ Perspective

Marc Newson, speaking to Dezeen at the launch, acknowledged the polarized reception, noting, "There are an enormous number of people who are just predisposed to not want to like this. They haven’t even seen the thing, let alone driven the thing. But the reality is people need to drive this car to really, really understand it, and I would urge people, before they pass those sorts of judgments, to try it."

The Luce represents the first automotive collaboration between Ive and Newson under their joint studio LoveFrom, which they founded after departing Apple in 2019. Both designers are celebrated for their influence on industrial design, and Newson already holds the record for the most expensive piece of furniture sold at auction by a living designer.

## Implications for Ferrari’s EV Strategy

While the Luce’s design sparked controversy, its record-breaking auction price underscores strong collector interest and the brand’s ability to command premium valuations for its inaugural electric offering. The proceeds earmarked for education align with Ferrari’s broader corporate responsibility goals, and the rapid sell-out of the 2026 allocation suggests that, despite mixed public sentiment, demand for the model remains robust.

Overall, the Luce’s journey-from a polarising launch to a historic auction-highlights the tension between heritage and innovation that legacy manufacturers face as they transition toward electrification.
