William Beck, an actor on the BBC medical drama Casualty, has described it as a privilege to lead the audience through the show's upcoming 40th anniversary special. The two-part story will air on September 5th on BBC One, starting at 20:00 BST.

The Bafta-winning show, first launched in 1986, is the world's longest-running medical drama. The anniversary special will feature a high-stakes major incident that throws the fictional Holby City Hospital into chaos.

Beck on Leading the Anniversary Story

Beck said the opportunity to lead the audience through this story for the 40th anniversary was "pinch-yourself stuff." He stated the special would be entertaining as well as traumatic, placing his character, Dylan Keogh, at the center in a new way.

"The opportunity to give people something that feels authentic and recognisable but also surprises them, that's gold dust in TV," Beck said. He added that with Dylan, there is a real opportunity to explore what happens when the person everyone relies on is pushed to his limits.

Dylan Keogh's Central Role Beck's character will be battling personal tragedy while leading his team through their darkest hour during the special. Beck reflected on his character's relationship with leadership, contradicting a common perception.

"I know it's been said that Dylan doesn't like the responsibility of leading the department, but I think he does," Beck stated.

Reflections on the Show's Legacy

Beck suggested audiences enjoy Casualty because they appreciate the NHS. He described the emergency department as a unique environment that people recognize and have sympathy for, both for the workers and the patients.

"It's also something that we know we're lucky to have, and we continue to fight for," Beck added. He noted that while his parents both worked for and supported the NHS, it did not make them blind to the huge difficulties it faces.

Production Details and Future

The show, which led to the hit spin-off Holby City, has been filmed at Cardiff's BBC Roath Lock Studios since 2011. It is also expected to move to a new fictional hospital in Wales next year.
