Taylor Swift Celebrates Dakota Johnson's Birthday on SNL

Taylor Swift appeared on screen during Dakota Johnson's Saturday Night Live monologue to celebrate Johnson's impending birthday. The pop star delivered a cake and squealed 'It's her birthday!' during the playful exchange, which also referenced Johnson's starring role in Swift's new music video.

Taylor Swift said she is not Johnson's therapist but described their dynamic as involving wine, oversharing, and Pedialyte. She also gave Johnson a birthday cake during the goodnights segment at the episode's end. Swift's appearance marked a return to the SNL stage, where she has a long history.

Music video premiere at the VMAs

The 'Patient Zero' music video starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell premiered during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27. Dakota Johnson presented Taylor Swift with the first-ever Artist Director Honors at that same 2026 ceremony. The video's premiere was a central part of Johnson's promotional activities for the episode.

Expanded release and promotion

Following the awards show premiere, an expanded eight-minute version of 'Patient Zero' was released exclusively on Apple Music. Taylor Swift promoted this extended cut via her Instagram Stories, driving further attention to the project that featured her SNL host.

Personal jokes and references

Dakota Johnson's monologue was packed with personal references. She joked about her history of dating musicians, saying it was a public service. "I think actually I’m doing a public service by dating them, because, ladies, I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft," Johnson said. She explicitly referenced her past relationships with musicians Chris Martin and Role Model, and also mentioned Travis Kelce and Cleveland.

Taylor Swift responded with a cheer for Kelce's hometown when Cleveland was mentioned. Johnson also attended Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding at Madison Square Garden in July, adding another layer to their discussed friendship.
