Film Independent Spirit Awards Expands for 2027 with New Categories and Qualifying Festival
The 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards introduces new categories, including Best International First Feature and Digital Creator Award, along with the addition of the Berlin International Film Festival as a qualifying festival. Film Independent, the organization behind the Spirit Awards, has unveiled significant updates for the 42nd annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, set to take place on March 6, 2027. Among the key changes are the introduction of two new award categories and the inclusion of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) as a qualifying festival.
## New Award Categories
The Spirit Awards will now recognize the Best International First Feature, a category dedicated to international films that mark the director’s narrative feature debut. This addition underscores Film Independent’s commitment to celebrating diverse and emerging voices in global cinema.
Another notable addition is the Digital Creator Award, which will honor independent storytellers creating original work for digital-first platforms. This award, developed in partnership with Max Reisinger, CEO and co-founder of Creator Camp, will include a $25,000 unrestricted grant for the winner. The Digital Creator Award joins the Someone to Watch, Truer Than Fiction, and Producers Award as part of the Emerging Filmmaker Awards.

## Ceremony and Recognition
The nominee brunch, where all nominees are celebrated and the Emerging Filmmaker Awards are presented, will be held on January 9, 2027, at The London West Hollywood. Nominations for the awards will be announced on December 2, 2026.
