Emily Blunt will receive the 19th annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) announced the honor, which will be presented at a black-tie dinner on Thursday, December 10, 2026, at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara.

Michael Douglas praised the actor's range. "Emily Blunt takes risks most actors wouldn't dare, moving between drama, comedy, and blockbuster spectacle with the same precision and commitment," he said. He added that her authenticity is what the award was created to celebrate.

Recent Career Highlights

Blunt's performance this summer in Steven Spielberg's sci-fi epic Disclosure Day drew some of the strongest reviews of her career. In the film, she stars as Margaret Fairchild, a Kansas City TV meteorologist drawn into revealing the existence of extraterrestrial life. This role follows her first Academy Award nomination for playing Kitty Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. She also earned a Golden Globe nomination this past year for her role opposite Dwayne Johnson in Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine.

Her career is marked by versatility across genres. She has starred in films including A Quiet Place, Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow, Into the Woods, Mary Poppins Returns, and The Devil Wears Prada. Earlier this year, she reprised her beloved role as Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada 2, reuniting with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci two decades after the original film became a cultural phenomenon.

The Kirk Douglas Award

The Kirk Douglas Award has been presented annually since 2006 to honor a lifelong contributor to cinema through their work in front of the camera, behind or both. The award benefits SBIFF's year-round educational programs. Past recipients include a wide range of film industry figures.

Festival and Educational Programs

The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival is scheduled for February 3 to February 13, 2027. Passes are currently on sale. The festival's educational programs, supported by events like the Kirk Douglas Award gala, serve over 18,000 local children, students, and families. These initiatives include AppleBox, Mike's FieldTrip to the Movies, the Rosebud program, Film Camp, and the 10-10-10 Mentorship program, all directed toward under-represented and under-served communities in Santa Barbara County.

Last year's festival featured more than 200 films, including 46 world premieres and 80 U.S. Premieres from 50 countries. It celebrated over 60 Academy Award winners and nominees, such as Adam Sandler, Michael B. Jordan, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Official events for the 2027 festival will be held at venues including the historic Arlington Theatre and the recently opened SBIFF Film Center.
